PHOENIX --- California Baptist University produced a record-breaking second round at the GCU Invitational on Monday, as four Lancers finished under par to place the Lancers second out of 15 teams.
The 15-team field was met with a windy day for the first two rounds, as the Lancers shattered the previous program record for low score in 18 holes with a 12-under-par 276 in the second round.
The 12-under score moved the Lancers up seven spots after shooting a 15-over-par 303 in the first round. Grand Canyon went into the clubhouse with a 1-over-par 577 to hold a two-stroke lead over the Lancers, who finished with a 3-over-par 579. CBU and the Lopes hold a 15 stroke lead over the next closest opponent in the field, as Northern Arizona and Seattle are tied at third with a 594.
The 27-stroke swing was anchored by Sofia Chabon, who lit the course on the fire with a 5-under-par 67 to move into a tie for seventh. Her performance moves her into second all-time with Erica Wang, who shot a 5-under-67 at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate in 2016.
Haruka Shintani and Samantha Martirez are tied with Chabon at seventh, as all three players hold an even-par 144. Shintani produced a bogey-free 3-under-par 69 and moves into fifth all-time for low score in 18 holes. Martirez had a bogey-free back nine to shoot a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. She followed up both bogeys in the first round with a birdie on the next hole.
Hailey Loh showed some true grit out on the course, shooting a 2-under-par 70 with six birdies and two double bogeys. Loh is currently T-16th. Belle Balkan finished with a 78-81=159 and is currently T-62nd.
