Lancers Match Best-Ever Ranking in NCAA Era at No. 17 Heading into Regular-Season Finale

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's water polo matched its best-ever ranking in the NCAA era when Wednesday's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll ranked the Lancers 17th overall.
CBU has won two games in a row and five of its last six games to move to 5-9 this season and 3-3 in the Golden Coast Conference. The Lancers will end the regular season with a GCC game at No. 14 San Diego State on Saturday at noon.
It marks the first time in nine years the Lancers have been ranked in the top 17. CBU was last ranked in the top 17 of the NCAA over two weeks in April of 2012.
This season, the Lancers are tied for fourth place in the GCC standings. They will need a top-four finish to secure a trip to the conference tournament this year.
Loyola Marymount and CBU are both tied for fourth place at 3-3 in the conference, while Azusa Pacific is right behind them both at 2-4. The Lions will end the regular season with a game against Pacific, while the Cougars will face Concordia (1-5) in their final GCC game of the year on Saturday.
A win for CBU and loss for LMU next week would secure fourth place for the Lancers. Even with a CBU loss, there would be a path there if LMU loses and APU defeats Concordia. It would create a three-way tie for fourth between APU, LMU and CBU.
The Lancers would hold the tiebreaker in that scenario, which is based on margin of victory between those three. CBU defeated Azusa Pacific 15-9 and lost to LMU 11-10, which gives them a five-goal margin of victory. APU has a minus one margin of victory after its 12-8 win over LMU and six-goal loss to CBU, while the Lions have a minus three goal margin of victory with their loss to the Cougars and one-goal win over the Lancers.
