FRESNO, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team ended its season on a high note with a nail-biting 12-11 victory over the Azusa Pacific Cougars in the 5th Place Match.
The Lancers end their season 14-11, their highest win total since 2023, and earn their first tournament win since 2023. The season finale also marks CBU's last match as a member of the Golden Coast Conference, as they will suit up as members of the Big West Conference beginning in July.
The first quarter was all Lancers as they would connect on four quick goals to take an early 4-1 lead over the Cougars. CBU's lead expanded to as many as four goals in the second period, but APU would respond with a 4-1 run to trim the lead down to a more manageable deficit at the half at 7-5.
The Lancers would control the third period, led by a pair of goals from Niya Bumbaca that would seem to lock up the victory for the Lancers. However, APU did not give up in their final game of the season, scoring the first two goals of the final period to force Julie Snodgrass to regroup her team. The Lancers would give themselves some major breathing room as Delila Moreno laced her first goal of the game with 5:09 to play. APU responded two minutes later to inch within one goal once again. Emmie Ramirez would distance the Lancers once again with a clutch goal with 54 seconds to go to make it 12-10 in favor of CBU.
APU would execute the 2-for-1 opportunity with a quick goal with 42 seconds remaining, putting themselves in position to keep the ball last and have a chance to tie. The Lancers would take advantage of APU's aggression on the ensuing possession, drawing an exclusion that extended the shot clock and gave the Lancers the win, 12-11.
Emmie Ramirez once again led the way with four goals, four steals, and two assists, and was named the GCC All-Tournament Team. The 2026 GCC Newcomer of the Year finishes the season with 77 goals, 54 assists, and 50 steals. Her 131 total points tied her for the most in a single season in the NCAA-era in program history, as well as being top ten in points, assists, and steals in a single season in program history. Niya Bumbaca also left it all out in the pool in her final game of the season with two goals and two assists, giving her 64 assists this season, which is the new single-season record for assists in a season for CBU. Madison Haworth would be the only other multi-goal scorer in the match with two goals on four shots.
Amelia Urry and Tyanna Schneider would end their careers in the cage, combining for seven total saves, led by Schneider with four in the second half. Morgan Gates, Reese Beringer, Aubrey Newton, Julia Almendariz, and Devyn Ruffer also end their Lancer careers in this match as some of the most impactful seniors in the program's NCAA era.
