VB PREVIEW: Lancers Set to Open 2021 Season at Georgia State Invitational
8/24/2021 12:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
ATLANTA – California Baptist University volleyball is all geared up to begin the 2021 season, as the Lancers are scheduled to play a trio of matches at this weekend's opening Georgia State Invitational against Memphis, Chattanooga and the host Panthers.
CBU polished off its 16th season with a record of .500 or better last year over the last 17 years in the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the Lancers have gone 43-35 in the last three seasons at the NCAA Division I and Western Athletic Conference levels.
"I'm really excited about this year's team," Coach Branden Higa said. "We have a good blend of veterans and newcomers. The energy in the gym and from the team is remarkable. It's been great to be part of building this team and watching them design and commit to their mission and culture. I can't wait for our students, fans and community to get a chance to see this group compete."
This year, CBU's 18-woman roster is comprised of 13 returners and five newcomers, including two transfers. The Lancers bring back two all-conference honorees in Tesa Oaks, a 2018 All-WAC First Teamer, and Christine Graf, a member of the 2019 WAC All-Freshman Team.
The WAC picked the Lancers to finish fourth in the conference's preseason poll for the third-straight season. As it looks to outperform that expectation, CBU will lean on the experience and leadership of its players who are going into their fourth or fifth years on the team in Oaks, Sydney Marks, Cassidy Dennison and Hana Okuhara.
The Lancers also have two new transfers, Anouk van Noord and Scherine Dahoue, who will compete for playing time right away. Van Noord was an America East All-Conference First Team pick with UMBC after she led the conference in kills (178) in 2021. Dahoue averaged 3.40 kills and 2.82 digs a set last season with Florida Atlantic.
