
CBU Opens 2021 Season with Doubleheader at Georgia State Invite

ATLANTA – California Baptist University volleyball opened the 2021 season with a doubleheader at the Georgia State Invitational on Friday.
The Lancers dropped both matches to Memphis (25-19, 25-23, 25-19) and host Georgia State (25-17, 25-22, 25-23). Memphis opens the year with a 2-0 record, while Georgia State begins 1-1 and California Baptist is 0-2.
CBU will wrap up the first weekend of the year with a match against Chattanooga on Saturday at 8 a.m. Pacific. The Mocs defeated Georgia State in three sets before being swept by Memphis on Friday.
Junior libero Paige Johnstone got off to a strong start to the season by averaging five digs a set, with 30 overall over both matches on Friday. Juniors Scherine Dahoue and Christine Graf led the offense with 17 and 16 kills, respectively, on the day.
Dahoue, a junior transfer from Florida Atlantic, posted a team-high 3.25 points a set, with the help of three blocks and an ace. Graf hit a team-high .324 percent (16-4-37).
MEMPHIS
CBU got a match-high 18 digs from Johnstone, while Cassidy Dennison also eclipsed double-digit digs with 11 in the season opener versus Memphis. Hana Okuhara nearly had a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs, while Leah Pease added 17 assists.
The Lancers' offense was led by three players with nine kills: Tesa Oaks, Graf and Dahoue. Graf hit a team-high .348 (9-1-23), while Dahoue had two blocks and an ace.
GEORGIA STATE
Johnstone continued to lead CBU's defense with a match-high 12 digs against the Panthers, while Okuhara posted a team-high 19 assists.
Ashlyn Nevrla put together a strong showing in her collegiate debut, with three blocks and five kills on a .500 hitting percentage (5-1-8) against Georgia State. Dahoue posted a team-high eight kills in the match, while Graf logged seven kills and two blocks.
