RIVERSIDE – A pair of big second-half runs led California Baptist University women's water polo to sweep a doubleheader versus CSUN and Pomona-Pitzer, as it hosted the Lancer Joust to open its home season on Saturday.
The 24th-ranked Lancers secured a 9-8 victory over No. 23 CSUN and a 14-11 win over Pomona-Pitzer, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Kira O'Donell (seven goals, two assists) and Jamie Hutton (five goals, four assists) each had a team-high nine points on the day, while Vicky Martinez had two hat tricks on the day, along with O'Donell. Both goalies played big parts in the wins, as Madison Gerg had a career-high 10 saves and two steals against CSUN and true freshman Ava Ratajczak logged 13 saves and a steal in her collegiate debut in the cage.
It brings CBU's record to 2-4 on the season, while CSUN opens up at 1-1 and Pomona-Pitzer moves to 1-3. It's been another challenging start to the season for CBU, as five of its six games have come against five top-25 ranked teams, four in the top 20 and three in the top 12.
O'Donell and Martinez both scored hat tricks, while Hutton had two goals in CBU's one-goal win over CSUN. It was a tightly-contested game, as there were seven ties and no team ever led by more than two goals.
The Matadors held a 5-4 lead with 3:23 to play in the third quarter, but a 4-1 run gave CBU an 8-6 advantage with 3:52 left in regulation. Two goals from Martinez and one each for O'Donell and Melinna Galbraith made up the Lancers' run.
CSUN fought back to level the score at 8-8 with 1:57 to play, but Martinez scored the game-winning goal with 1:40 to play. The Lancers locked in defensively down the stretch, as Abby Mammen forced steals on the Matadors' final two possessions.
Martinez was clutch for CBU down the stretch. The senior two-meter scored all three of her goals in the second half and broke ties twice in the final 4:20, including the eventual game winner.
In the nightcap with the Sagehens, Hutton erupted for seven points on three goals and four assists. O'Donell scored a game-high four goals and added two assists, while Martinez notched her second hat trick, as well. Kyndall Burrell also had three assists and a goal.
CBU closed out the game on a 5-1 run over the final 11 minutes. O'Donell and Hutton scored twice in that flurry, while Martinez had the other.
O'Donell got the run started when she scored a pair over the final 54 seconds of the third quarter to give CBU an 11-10 edge going into the fourth. Hutton and Martinez netted the first two goals of the final quarter to give the Lancers a 13-10 lead with 5:47 to go.
Pomona-Pitzer stopped the bleeding and made it 13-11 with 3:42 remaining, but Hutton scored the final goal of the game with 2:32 to play to put the game on ice.
