The Lancers Take on GCU In Phoenix
2/17/2022 7:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – The women's basketball rematch between California Baptist University and Grand Canyon again went the way of the Lopes, who won by a score of 75-55. The Lancers record now stands at 18-6 and 9-4 in the Western Athletic Conference while GCU moves to 17-7 overall with a 10-3 WAC record.
GCU now controls second place in the conference standings, a spot that comes with an extra bye in the upcoming WAC Tournament that will begin on March 8.
The Lopes aren't in the clear just yet though, with five more conference games slated before the start of the tournament, four of which are away from Phoenix. The Lancers have the opposite schedule with four of their five remaining conference games to be played at home in Riverside.
Ane Olaeta was the only Lancer to reach double-figures in the game, scoring 12 points to go with three rebounds and three steals. CBU forced the Lopes into a season-high 27 turnovers, but more often than not the GCU defense canceled out those Lancer opportunities.
The Lopes controlled the game through tough defense and controlling the glass, out-rebounding CBU 56-35. The Lancers simply never found their shot on Thursday night, shooting just 29.2% from the field. CBU made a late push, going on a 13-2 run in the fourth, but the game was played nearly even after the final media timeout halted that Lancer run.
UP NEXT
California Baptist returns home to close out the weekend with a Saturday matinee against Seattle U. The Redhawks are in the midst of playing five games in five different cities in just 12 days and arrive in Riverside with a two-game win streak under their belts after defeating Lamar on the road and UTRGV at home.
