Offense Leads CBU to 3-0 Win Over Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON – A strong offensive performance led California Baptist University volleyball to its first win of the season over its host at the Charleston Southern Tournament on Saturday.
The Lancers ended the first weekend of the 2022 season with a straight-set victory over the Buccaneers, 25-22, 25-20, 25-14. It handed Charleston Southern its first loss of the season after it won its season debut in five sets over Appalachian State Friday night.
A three-headed attack from Christine Graf, Scherine Dahoue and Cassidy Dennison were key to the victory. All three eclipsed double-digit kills while maintaining hitting percentages above .350. Graf led the way with a match-high 15 kills on a .520 percentage (15-2-25), Dahoue added 12 kills at a .360 clip (12-3-25) and Dennison finished up with 10 on a .409 percentage (10-1-22).
Senior libero Paige Johnstone had her finest match of the season, with 17 digs and four aces. Setters Leah Pease and Reese Reed (two aces) kept the offense clicking and finished with 24 and 14 assists, respectively. Middle blockers Laura Walewska (three kills, two blocks) and Chandler Gorman (two kills, two blocks) each had multiple kills and blocks.

CBU broke a 20-20 tie with a 5-2 run to win a key first set. Dennison had two kills in that span, while a key block from Graf and Walewska gave the Lancers set point, 24-22.
A 5-2 run highlighted by kills from Dennison, Graf, Gorman and Dahoue gave the Lancers a 14-11 edge in set two. CSU fought back within a point, 18-17, but the Lancers called timeout and regrouped and pushed their lead back to four, 21-17, after a Dennison kill and an ace from Pease.
The Buccaneers fought back within two points, 22-20, but kills from Graf, Dahoue and a Johnstone ace gave CBU the win on a 3-0 run.
The Lancers did away with any dramatics when they opened set three on a 9-1 run en route to a comfortable 25-14 victory in set three for the sweep.

California Baptist plays the second week of the season at the Washington State Tournament, where it will face the host Cougars on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. and CSU Bakersfield and Belmont on Sept. 2.
The Lancers will then make their home debut when they host the CBU Tournament on Sept. 9-10. CBU will face Idaho State first on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. and then Air Force and UC Riverside on at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Sept. 10.
