PULLMAN – California Baptist University volleyball will look to put together its first winning streak of the 2022 season, as it heads to the Washington State Tournament this week.
The Lancers come in riding the wave of their first win of the season, a sweep over their hosts at the Charleston Southern Tournament on Saturday (25-22, 25-20, 25-14). Christine Graf and Scherine Dahoue each earned All-Tournament Team honors after leading the offense on opening weekend.
After this week, the Lancers will then make their home debut when they host the CBU Tournament on Sept. 9-10. CBU will face Idaho State first on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. and then Air Force and UC Riverside on at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Sept. 10.
EARLY LEADERS
Both Graf and Dahoue come into the week tied averaging 3.7 kills per set. Graf has done so on a .356 hitting percentage (37-11-73), while Cassidy Dennison is averaging 3.11 kills on a .333 percentage to give CBU a balanced three-headed attack.
Leah Pease and Reese Reed have split time at setter so far and are averaging 6.7 and 4.4 assists per set, respectively. Senior libero Paige Johnstone comes in leading the defense on the backline with 3.8 digs per set and the offense at the service line with seven aces. Dennison ranks second on the team with 2.78 digs a set.
A trio of Lancers ended week one with at least seven blocks. Middle blockers Chandler Gorman and Laura Walewska each have eight, while Graf has seven to her credit.
OPPONENTS AT A GLANCE
CBU will open the week against the host Cougars. Washington State comes in with a 2-1 record, thanks to wins over Duke and Rider, and its loss coming against 10th-ranked BYU at the Cougars' Doterra Classic in Provo. WSU put together a 20-win season in 2021 that led it to an NCAA Tournament berth.
CSU Bakersfield is 0-3 after taking losses to Arizona State, Toledo and Northern Iowa at the ASU Webb-Burbridge Classic in week one. The Roadrunners went 18-11 and qualified for the NIVC in 2021.
Belmont is 1-2 after it dropped matches to Auburn and Marist but ended week one with a win over Panther Invitational host Georgia State. The Bruins will also play Lipscomb in their home opener on Tuesday night before heading to Washington. They finished the 2021 campaign with a 9-20 record.
