SANTA BARBARA – The California Baptist University men's soccer team hit the road for the first time in 2022, visiting UC Santa Barbara on Sunday for a night game at Harder Stadium.
The Lancers played the Gauchos tight in the first half before UCSB adjusted in the second to come away with the 2-0 home win. UCSB showed why it is the reigning Big West Conference regular season and tournament champions, returning the bulk of a roster that earned a trip to the national tournament last season. The Gauchos notched their first win of the year to improve to 1-0-1 while CBU moves to 1-1 on the young season.
"Sometimes you just have to acknowledge you got beat by a really good team and not make excuses," said CBU Head Coach Coe Michaelson afterwards. "We knew this was an elite game, to be their home opener. But we also know we can be much better and as coaches it's on us to get the group a bit fresher for our next games."
The Lancer defense was stout in the first half, successfully defending against seven Gaucho shots. However, Santa Barbara made changes at halftime that led to a pair of goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Four Lancers recorded shots on the night, but Brian Gonzalez out the only one on goal. Evan Ince played the full 90 minutes in goal for CBU, making three saves, two of which came in the first half.
The Lancers return home for a pair of games, with their next match set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, against Gonzaga.
