Lancers Challenge Cal in Berkeley
9/10/2022 3:14:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY – California Baptist University men's soccer traveled to Berkeley for a tilt against the Pac-12's Cal Golden Bears on their home field. A defensive battle for much of the contest went the way of the Bears late as the home team claimed a 1-0 victory.
"Unfortunately today's result didn't reflect the balance of play, but it was clear from early on that the onus was on us to break them down and manage the counter attacks. We knew that they were waiting for just that single moment where they could snatch it from us," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the game. "But it's a team game, and while we feel hard done by, we have to move on and turn the justifiable frustration into a big performance in our next one."
The loss pushes CBU's record to 3-2 on the year while Cal finally got to celebrate a win, now standing at 1-1-3 on the season. Luis Mueller paced the Lancers with three shots on the day, putting one on target. David Cordes and Antonio Gomez also put one on frame. Defensively, starting goalkeeper Nolan Premack made two saves in his fourth start of the year.
The opening 45 minutes was a slower pace than recent CBU matches as the first-time opponents felt each other out and tried to find opportunities to strike. The Lancers led the half in shots with four while holding the Bears to a two shots, putting one on frame.
The second half saw the Lancers press the action early and often. Cordes put the first shot on goal for the Lancers in the 57th minute, though the Cal keeper made easy work of the shot from roughly 35 yards out.
Cal rocketed a good shot on goal in the 56th minute, forcing Premack to make his second save of the day, fully outstretched to his left. The Golden Bears would break the stalemate in the 78th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers would get three decent looks after that, putting two on goal, but were unable to equalize before the final horn sounded.
The Lancers are home for their next match, hosting Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday, September 13, at 7 p.m. at the brand new CBU Soccer Stadium.
