MINNEAPOLIS – The California Baptist University men's and women's cross country teams had outstanding performances, both finishing as runner-up at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational hosted by Minnesota on Friday.
"Super tough, gritty performances on both sides. We told them yesterday, that regardless of how it goes, it's still just the beginning, and we don't need to get too high or too low regardless," said CBU head coach Adam Tribble after the competition. "They've shown a great deal of commitment and determination this season, and I'm just so pleased they were able to see a bit of the fruits of their labor."
The women's program entered the Women's Gold 6k event ranked No. 29 nationally and No. 6 in the West Region, and finished ahead of five other nationally ranked teams today in No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 14 Colorado State, No. 23 Michigan State, No. 25 Ohio State and No. 26 Iowa State. The event was won by No. 19 Utah.
No. 7 Wisconsin won the Men's Gold 8k. The CBU men are currently unranked nationally, but finished ahead of No. 28 Michigan State in the event. Entering the competition, CBU was ranked No. 7 in the West Region.
Individually, the CBU women had four runners finish in the Top 25. Yasna Petrova led the way for the Lancers, besting her previous best time at this distance by over 10 second to finish third overall in a time of twenty minutes and 40.7 seconds. Greta Karinauskaite finished 16th (21:16.5), Maja Dzialoszewska at 20th (21:20.7), and Maelle Porcher at 21st (21:23.1) while Emilia Mikszuta came in at 35th (21:43.9).
The CBU men had five individuals finish in the Top 25. Florian Le Pallec clocked a Top-10 finish at 24:25.7. Arturs Medveds posted a 24:23.0 time to finish 17th, Matias Reynaga in 22nd place (24:44.1) and Giedrius Valincius at 23rd (24:44.6).
It's not the first time the Lancers have had a high level of success at the Roy Griak Invitational. In 2019, the women won the team title while the men had a fourth place finish.
The Lancers will compete next at the NCAA Pre-Nationals Meet hosted by Oklahoma State on Oct. 15. Members of CBU cross country will also compete in the Highlander Invitational hosted by UC Riverside on the same day. Coverage and results will be available at CBULancers.com.
