Pease Reaches Assist Milestone Against NM State

LAS CRUCES – California Baptist University volleyball hit the road for the second conference game of 2022, traveling to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on perennial WAC powerhouse NM State.
The Aggies proved too much for the Lancers as the home team earned their first conference win of the season in straight sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-18). CBU now stands at 6-7 on the year with a conference record of 1-1, while NM State improves to 8-5 on the year, also at 1-1 in league play.
Senior setter Leah Pease made history late in the first set, setting up Christine Graf for a kill and earning CBU career assist No. 1,000. Pease finished the game with 27 total, bringing her running count to 1,018. She is the second Lancer to reach the milestone in the Division I era, joining Hana Okuhara who finished her career last season with 1,005 assists.
Set one was a story of runs, as both sides rattled off stretches of dominance. It was tight late, as CBU used a 6-1 run to charge back and trail by one, 22-23. The Aggies would answer with back-to-back kills to claim the set. The second and third sets were controlled by the Aggies who combined solid hitting with eight aces to earn the win.
Graf led the offense with nine kills, followed by Cassidy Dennison with eight, and Michalina Rola with seven. Paige Johnstone and Brianna Young each recordere 10 digs on the day. For Johnston, it marked her 11th game this season with double-digit digs, while Young set a career-high with the same total.
Next up for the Lancers is a trip to Phoenix to take on GCU on Oct. 1. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Pacific time.
