SEATTLE - California Baptist University men's soccer took on the 20th-ranked Seattle U Redhawks in Emerald City on Sunday afternoon. A rainy and physical game was scoreless at the half, but the Redhawks would find the back of the net in the second half, winning the contest 3-0. CBU drops to 5-5-2 on the season and is handed their first conference loss, now standing at 3-1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.
"First half wasn't really great for either team, and we started the second half well. Unfortunately, a really dangerous moment for us turned into a goal for them in what was probably the defining moment of the game," Head Coach Coe Michaelson observed post-game. "It didn't have to be the defining moment, but we did not react well to going behind. We had chances, but they were much more clinical in the end, and we did something we haven't done in a while by giving away some sloppy goals. Winning on the road against top teams is tough, so now it's our job to respond and take care of business back in Riverside."
It was a slower first half than normal as the teams navigated the growing moisture on the field, with both teams combining for just four shots and only one on goal.
Seattle would breakthrough in the 58th minute, scoring off a long pass inside the box, doubled the lead in the 68th minute, and scored the final point in the 87th minute to reach the final scoreline.
The Lancers remain in the top four of the WAC standings, having already played first-place Seattle and second-place San Jose State. The Lancers are set to play the two teams closest behind them in the standings, UNLV and Utah Tech, in next week's final home series. UNLV will be up first on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before hosting the Trailblazers at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, also serving as Senior Night.
