MARICOPA, AZ – The University of Wyoming is hosting 20 teams in Arizona this week for the Cowgirl Classic. California Baptist University women's golf team has ended day one of competition in a tie for eighth place with Fresno State at 26-over (602). Sacramento State leads all teams at 3-over (579), with UNLV in second at 10-over (586) and UC Riverside in third with a score of 19-over (595).
The Lancers are within striking distance of a podium finish, just seven strokes out of the top three, thanks largely to Sofia Chabon, who led CBU with a 4-over (148), highlighted by the Lancers' only under-par round, going 1-under in the opening 18. She closed out day one in a tie for 17th with five other competitors.
Samantha Dizon and Damini Law Ghanshyani each carded a round of even play, shooting 72s in the first and second rounds, respectively. Dizon finished the day in sole possession of 23rd place with a 5-over (149) two-round cumulative score. That was good for a one-stroke advantage over Ghanshyani, who is tied for 24th with a 6-over (150) score after 36 holes.
Hailey Loh and Haruka Shintani each finished the day 14-over (158) to claim two of the four T70 placements.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday morning with another shotgun start. The Lancers will be paired with players from Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis, and UTEP for the 7:30 a.m. tee time.
