RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team fell in five sets to the Abilene Christian Wildcats in the second match of their home conference opening weekend.
The Lancers now hold a 10-5 record for the year, and a 3-1 mark in conference play. The Wildcats improved to 2-2 in Western Athletic Conference play and got their first win against the Lancers in the short history between the two programs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Wildcats came out hot with the 25-20 set one victory, capitalizing off seven Lancer errors in the frame. ACU continued to put pressure on the CBU defense in the second and, despite a late push by CBU, pulled out the second set to take the commanding 2-0 lead.
The Lancers showed plenty of fight and resilience in the third set, quickly jumping out to the 10-4 lead. CBU would score ten of the next 12 points to force ACU to drain its timeouts and ultimately put them away 25-19. CBU would carry that momentum into the fourth, prevailing in a back-and-forth battle. With the set tied 23-23, setter Reese Reed scored back-to-back aces to push the match to a fifth set.
