The Lancers Dominate the Texans on the Glass in Wire to Wire Victory

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's basketball team started its 2024 home slate with a wire-to-wire victory over the Tarleton Texans 77-63. The Lancers handed the Texans their first conference loss of the season behind six players in double-figures and a +21 rebounding advantage.
The win moved the Lancers to 9-7 on the season, including 7-3 at home and 2-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. The win also helped the Lancers remain undefeated in the all-time series vs. the Texans at an impressive 5-0.
PLAY-BY-PLAY:
The Lancers jumped out to an early 10-2 run on the Texans capitalized by a pair of triples by Brantly Stevenson and Hunter Goodrick. The Texans would quickly gather themselves and get the score to a one-possession game at 17-15 at the ten-minute mark of the first half. The Lancers would push their lead to as many as seven in the opening frame, but once again, the Texans would rally and cut the deficit to just one going into the halftime break at 35-34.
Both teams shot well in the opening half of play, with CBU hitting on 45% of their attempts and the Texans at 48%. Dominique Daniels Jr. paced the Lancer, scoring through the first 20 minutes with nine points on three made field goals.
CBU would open the second half with the same determination and energy they opened the first half with, quickly amassing an 8-0 run on the Texans. The Lancers grew their lead to as many as 21 in the second half, led by a significant effort on the glass.
CBU scored 11 second-chance points in the second half alone and hauled in 19 offensive rebounds for the game.
The Lancers would hold their lead from start to finish in the game and take the game 77-63 over the Texans.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Rebounding was the story of the night for the Lancers, outrebounding the Texans 45-24, including a 19-8 advantage on the offensive glass. Rebounding has been the calling card for the Lancers all season, outrebounding their opponent in all but three games this season.
Yvan Ouedraogo and Goodrick led the incredible effort on the glass, each recording double-doubles. Goodrick and Ouedraogoo combined for 28 points and 25 rebounds while both shooting over 60% from the floor. Oudraogo left his mark on the defensive end as well, tying a career-high with four blocks including an incredible chase down rejection in the second half. Kendal Coleman chipped in eight rebounds to go along with ten points, while Scotty Washington, Blondeau Tchoukuiegno, and Brantly Stevenson all recorded multiple rebounds on the night.
Daniels Jr. once again led the Lancer offense with 17 points and a season-high six assists. Six total Lancers found themselves in double figures tonight, marking the first time that has happened this season. CBU shot 48% from the floor for the game, their fourth-best shooting output of the year, and connected on 30 field goals for just the second time this season.
The CBU defense was again on full display tonight, holding Tarleton to 3-11 from distance and their two leading scorers in check. Jakorie Smith and KiAndre Gaddy, who average 27 points per game combined, were held to 15 points on 7-17 shooting.
