CEDAR CITY, UT--- The California Baptist University volleyball team continued on its four-match road trip with a 3-0 loss to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Thursday evening. The loss drops CBU to 1-4 in conference play, while SUU improves to 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference and an impressive 7-1 at home.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers were plagued by a slow start in the opening set, falling behind 5-0 and eventually 11-4 at the largest deficit. CBU would storm back on the Thunderbirds, closing within two points of Southern Utah at 23-21. A timely Thunderbird kill followed by a CBU error would hold off the comeback attempt and give the home squad a 1-0 lead.
The beginning of set two was much more even, with the Thunderbirds taking a slight lead early on. CBU would take its first lead at 13-12 but could never build its lead past one point. A 4-1 SUU run would swing momentum back in the home team's favor, and they would ride out the 25-20 victory for the 2-0 lead. In what proved to be the final frame, the Thunderbirds were seemingly flawless, and the errors piled up for the Lancers. The home team would wrap the match in the third set and take their fourth victory of the conference slate.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Amanda Darling posted 14 digs in the three-set match and added in five assists in a strong showing for the Lancers. Toree Tiffee added a career-high three aces in meaningful action for the Lancers. Nicole Mauser was the leader on offense with seven kills, while Anna Jackson followed closely behind with six.
NEXT: The Lancers will stay in Utah and take on the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Saturday, October 12 at 12 PM PT.
