RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team will conclude its four-match road trip with a visit to the Beehive State to take on Southern Utah and Utah Tech this week as conference play ramps up.
The Lancers are coming off a three-set defeat at the hands of Grand Canyon on Monday night and will have a short turnaround to prep for the Thursday night match versus the Thunderbirds. CBU is 1-3 in conference play after sweeping Utah Valley to begin the season and falling in five sets to both UT Arlington and Abilene Christian.
The Thunderbirds will be the first opponent for the Lancers on Thursday evening and will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs. CBU holds the series handily with a 5-1 record vs SUU, including a sweep of the Thunderbirds last season. The Thunderbirds currently are tied for second in the conference standings at 3-1, along with Grand Canyon and Utah Tech, after wins over Abilene Christian, Tarleton, and Utah Tech. SUU's lone loss of the season came at the hands of unbeaten UT Arlington.
The Lancers will finish the long trip with a Saturday afternoon tilt against Utah Tech, who has also gotten off to a 3-1 start in conference play. The Trailblazers bested ACU, Tarleton, and Utah Valley before losing its first conference match to rival Southern Utah this past Saturday in four sets. The Lancers and Trailblazers have a long history together that dates back to 2006, and this match will mark the 23rd all-time meeting. CBU holds the series 15-7, including a three-match winning streak that has all been sweeps for CBU. Utah Tech has faired well at home against CBU, posting a 6-6 record at Burns Arena against the Lancers.
The Lancers have three players who have crossed the 100-kill threshold: Nicole Mauser, Eliana Posada, and Kali Wolf, led by Posada with 112 total kills. Mia Jerue has continued to impress on the service line for CBU, leading the team with 27 aces, which is good enough for second place in the conference and 36th place in the nation. Jerue tied the program record, along with Gianna Perez, for aces in a single match against Utah Valley with seven and helped the team set the NCAA-era record for total team aces in a single match.
