RIVERSIDE - In the first-ever regular season meeting between California Baptist University men's soccer and San Diego State, it was the Aztecs who held on late to claim the 2-1 victory in Riverside. CBU now holds a 1-1-1 record in Western Athletic Conference play, while SDSU is the only remaining undefeated team in the conference at 3-0.
"We know that they are exceptional with set pieces and counterattacks, and while we were good for large portions of the game, we had a few too many mistakes in us tonight, and they were able to capitalize," stated Head Coach Coe Michaelson after tonight's result. He added, "Hopefully, we can grow in that aspect of the game because, as we saw tonight, it takes only one or two poor moments to undo a whole lot of good work."
The first half saw a lot of extra effort plays, including three team saves, highlighted by a header stop by David Cordes on the goal line to keep the game even at zeros. Even though the Lancers managed nine shots in the half, SDSU's keeper only had to make one save.
The second half saw the Aztecs score a brace from a pair of free kick opportunities in the 60th and 68th minutes. CBU never ceased their rally efforts, which eventually paid off in the 87th minute when Luis Borrero danced between a pair of Aztec defenders and buried his second goal of the year into the right netting. The Lancers would continue pressing the action but wouldn't be able to manage a decent look after that.
The schedule doesn't ease up after this as the Lancers now prepare to host San Jose State and Seattle U in Riverside next week. The Spartans will be on campus for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Thursday night, while the match against the RedHawks will start at 4:00 p.m.
