SEATTLE, WA--- Windy conditions met the California Baptist women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon as they headed North to face Seattle U in a Western Athletic Conference match-up. An early goal from the Redhawks secured the victory for the home squad, dropping CBU to 3-3 in Western Athletic Conference play and to 7-6-2 on the season.
"Certainly a disappointing result, but I thought we competed with a lot of heart and frankly dominated the game. We continue to create very good attacking opportunities but we need to be sharper and more consistent on the finishing end," said Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "The goal scored was a missed clearance against the run of play but that's soccer sometimes, you can dominate a game and just one moment can be the difference. We're pretty banged up injuries wise right now so it will be good to get home, rest, and recover before getting back to work on the training field".
The first 45-minute frame saw just a single shot from the Lancer's offense courtesy of Jordan Roe. Seattle hounded CBU's backline through the majority of the first half, firing eight shots with three on frame. The Redhawks were rewarded with the only goal of the day from their attacking efforts, going ahead with a chip perfectly placed over CBU's backline in the 19th minute.
The second half lacked offensively for both sides due to heavy winds that made it challenging to drive upfield. CBU did improve from the previous half and totaled six shots with two on the frame. Mikayla O'Brien picked up four saves between the posts against the Redhawks, while Ava Westlund did the majority of the shooting with CBU, with three across her 72 minutes of action.
The Lancers have officially cemented fourth place in the WAC with their pair of losses this week but have managed to clinch a spot in the postseason. California Baptist will now return to Riverside to welcome the Grand Canyon Lopes for the final regular season match of the season before flying to Texas for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at the beginning of November.
