RIVERSIDE--- It was a scoreless draw at CBU Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening for the California Baptist women's soccer program as they hosted Grand Canyon to close the regular season. The Lancers secured a 3-3-1 Western Athletic Conference record and are now the fourth seed heading into the conference tournament.
The Grand Canyon and California Baptist backlines dueled through 90 minutes in a competitive stalemate that saw six combined shots on frame from both squads. The lack of on-goal shots was not because of a lack of offense but rather the amount of field blocks. The Lopes totaled 16 shots but only forced Mikayla O'Brien to make four saves between the CBU posts.
After 60 minutes of scoreless soccer, frustration began to creep in for both sides as fouls began to accrue. GCU collected four yellow cards in ten minutes during the second half, totaling five during the match. The Lancers earned a pair of yellow cards and committed seven fouls through the 90 minutes, but the Lopes were never able to convert on the multiple free-kick opportunities.
"Disappointing not to get 3 points tonight as I thought we certainly played well enough for 3 points. That being said, despite the number of players sidelined with injuries earning 1 point was still important for WAC tournament seeding going into next week," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Tonight we created some dangerous scoring opportunities but needed to be more consistent in getting off shots in the second half. We got caught up looking for specific shots instead of taking the shot opportunities presented. We'll be addressing that in training this week. In their final home game I thought our seniors did a great job leading us tonight."
The WAC Tournament will begin on November 3rd in Abilene, Texas, for CBU as they face the fifth-seeded Tarleton Texans. The winner of that match will face Utah Valley on November 6th before the November 9th championship match.
