PHOENIX, AZ: The California Baptist University volleyball team continued its four-match road trip with a visit to Phoenix, Arizona, to take on the Grand Canyon Lopes on Monday night. The Lopes would continue its home hot streak by taking the victory in three sets.
The loss drops CBU to 1-3 in conference play, while GCU would improve to 3-1 in Western Athletic Conference competition.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lopes came out of the gates with momentum and quickly built a five-point lead to force a CBU timeout. GCU would not take its foot off the gas and would throttle ahead for the 25-11 first-set victory. The second set was more of the same, with the Lopes jumping out to the early advantage and slowly building it to the end of the frame. GCU would lead by as many as nine and would hold that score to the 25-16 result.
CBU would take the lead early in the third set, mounting an early 6-1 run highlighted by some perfectly executed plays by Anna Jackson off the bench. The Lopes would erase that lead quickly and tie the match at 13. It was all the home team from that point forward, and the Lopes would ride out the set to complete the sweep at 25-17.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Kali Wolf continued her stellar defensive play with a career-best 18 digs in the three-set match and added in six kills, which was good enough for her to be second-best on the team. Nicole Mauser also continued her efficient play on the right side, with a team-best ten kills on a .333 hitting percentage.
NEXT: The Lancers will continue its four-game road trip with a trip to Cedar City, Utah, on Thursday to take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. First serve is set for 6 PM PT.
