ARLINGTON, TX--- The California Baptist University volleyball team earned the #5 seed and will enter into a matchup with #4 Utah Tech in the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Thursday in the Quarterfinals.
The Lancers turned around a very tumultuous 1-19 start into a 7-21 finish that saw them go 7-9 in conference play. CBU is entering the tournament on a hot streak as winners of six of their last eight matches, including getting wins over three of the top five teams in the conference. In the WAC Tournament, CBU is looking for its first-ever win after falling in straight sets to the eventual champions in the last two tournaments (SFA in 2022 and GCU in 2023).
CBU split the season series with Utah Tech, with both teams holding serve in its home gym. The Trailblazers swept the Lancers convincingly in St. George on October 12, with the total margin being 16 points. CBU returned the favor in an early November contest in a four-set victory on Senior Day. Historically, CBU has held the edge in this series, emerging victorious in 16 of the 24 matches the two teams have competed in since 2006. In the WAC era, CBU has the edge 6-5, including winning four of the last five matches.
The Lancers will be led by WAC Libero of the Year Amanda Darling, who led the conference in digs per set and posted seven matches of at least 20 digs during the conference stretch. Darling is joined by a pair of All-WAC Second Teamers, Madison Gilliland and Nicole Mauser, who led the team in blocks and kills, respectively.
