RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's basketball team suffered a setback on Thursday night, falling 69-46 to the visiting Utah Valley Wolverines.
The loss drops the Lancers to 7-6 in the Western Athletic Conference standings and concludes their season series with the Wolverines for the 2023-24 campaign. CBU is now tied for fourth place in the standings with SFA and sits one game back of Seattle U as the race to WAC Vegas heats up.
PLAY-BY-PLAY:
The Wolverines came out of the gates sizzling, opening up a double-digit lead on the Lancers halfway through the opening frame. The offensive onslaught would continue for UVU as their lead grew to as many as 18 in the first half. CBU would go on a 10-0 run to close that gap back into single digits with three minutes to play, but the Wolverines could convert the final two baskets of the half and lead 35-23 after 20 minutes.
The Wolverine's hot shooting spilled over into the second half as they scored the half's first eight points to balloon the lead to 20 and force a Lancer timeout. The Utah Valley lead grew to as many as 29 in the second half, with nothing falling for the Lancers from the field. CBU would show some fight in the waning minutes by scoring nine of the final 13 points but would ultimately fall 69-46 on their home floor.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Kendal Coleman shined off the bench for the Lancers, posting a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, both of which led the team. It was Coleman's second double-double of the season, and he did it on an efficient 5-7 from the field.
