PAYSON, AZ--- The California Baptist women's golf team rounded out their 2023-2024 campaign on Sunday afternoon at the Western Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, where the Lancers carded a fourth-place finish. True Freshman Pusanisa Ekkantrong had the best finish individually for CBU and ended in fourth after going 2-over-par during the final around.
California Baptist battled the strenuous course at The Rim Country Club well and faced a few uphill battles, both literally and figuratively. The exhausting course featured an extremely hilly landscape with several long holes, making it difficult for golfers to catch their breath before their next stroke. Nonetheless, the Lancers handled it well but struggled on the back nine holes during the final round. CBU tallied 14 bogeys and a pair of double bogeys across the most difficult part of the course, finishing the day with a 297 final score and bumping the squad's team total for the weekend to 896.
The final placement of teams and individuals came down to the very last stroke, but in the end, Seattle University was crowned WAC Champions. The Redhawks finished the weekend 40-over-par as a team, while Abilene Christian finished at 42-over-par and Grand Canyon ended at 43-over-par. The Lancers ended with a 44-over-par final score.
Though CBU finished in fourth, Head Coach Marc Machado's squad finished the season with their heads held high and had an impressive resume over the year. The Lancers carded a pair of team championships at two NCAA tournaments and battled a plethora of high-ranked teams throughout the season. Senior Captain Sofia Chabon earned her first individual championship title and freshman Pusanisa Ekkantrong also tallied her first individual tournament win.
California Baptist will graduate Chabon and Esther Lee, but overall have a young team. Returning as Lancers next year will be a pair of juniors in Damini Law Ghanshyani and Samantha Dizon, while freshman duo Burberry Zhang and Ekkantrong will make their second-year appearance.
The Lancers finished in the top-five of seven tournaments this season, while also carding a fourth-place finish at the WAC Championship Tournament for a second time in the last two years.
