RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team will prepare for another solo game week as they host the Utah Valley Wolverines on Thursday, October 16.
The Lancers are coming off a hard-fought home victory over the UT Arlington Mavericks last Saturday, defeating them in five sets in Van Dyne Gym. The win moved them to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
Utah Valley was the WAC preseason favorite after finishing last season 10-6 in conference play and earning a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. This season, the Wolverines are second in the conference standings in the early going at 3-1 with sweeps over ACU, Tarleton, and UT Arlington. UVU's only loss came at the hands of top-seeded Utah Tech on the road in St. George. In the series history, the Lancers are 7-5 against the Wolverines and have fared very well at home against UVU, claiming victory in each of the last three meetings in Riverside.
CBU will have to contend with one of the best blocking teams in the country, as the Wolverines rank #1 in the NCAA in both blocks per set (3.41) and total blocks (208) through 16 matches. A large part of that success is the play of starting middles Bella Wooden and Alyvia Jaffa, who both rank in the top 50 nationally in blocks per set. Wooden is second in the nation in blocks per set and is first in total blocks with 119.
The Lancers continue to deal with multiple injuries that have forced them to use 13 different lineup combinations through 16 matches this season. Maddie Brown, Gianna Perez, and Emery DeJong are the only three players who have suited up in all 17 matches this season, and Brown is the only player to have started every match. Despite the injuries, the Lancers have found success behind the play of DeJong and Eliana Posada, who have been the offensive leaders for CBU. DeJong leads the team with 213 kills, while Posada has been the Lancers' most efficient hitter at a .360 hitting percentage and averaging 3.24 kills per set.
