RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team suffered a home loss on Thursday night as they battled the Utah Valley Wolverines to a three-set conclusion in Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers now fall to 2-4 in Western Athletic Conference play with the loss, as the Wolverines improve to 4-1, one game back of the still-unbeaten Utah Tech Trailblazers.
The first set was the most competitive of the match as the Lancers battled one of the best blocking teams in the nation. CBU would collect an 11-10 lead before the Wolverines would take control of the set with a 3-0 run. CBU kept within striking distance but would be finished off by the Wolverines, 25-21. The second set was a dominant display from the Wolverines, as they executed multiple scoring runs, culminating in a 25-13 victory and a 2-0 set lead.
CBU would kick off the third set with some renewed energy and would take a 10-9 lead to force UVU into an early timeout. Out of the break, the Wolverines would go on a 7-3 run to retake the advantage, but CBU would counter with back-to-back points from Filippa Botcher to pull within one point. UVU would retort with a pair of 3-0 runs down the stretch of the period to pull out a 25-19 set win and the sweep. The errors would be too numerous to overcome for CBU in the match, as they committed a total of 41 errors, including 17 in the service game.
Olivia Melton submitted a solid performance on the outside with ten kills to lead the way for Trevor Johnson's offense. Reese Reed and Maddie Brown combined for 27 total assists and nine digs in split time at setter.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road next week for a pair of Texas matchups beginning with a trip to Arlington to face the UTA Mavericks on Thursday, October 23.
