ARLINGTON, TX--- The California Baptist University volleyball team kicked off its Texas road trip in Arlington as they would face the UTA Mavericks at the College Park Center.
The Mavericks would claim the match in four sets to bring their conference record to 3-4, while the Lancers would drop to 2-5. Both teams have now held serve at home in the season series as the Lancers claimed the victory a few weeks ago in Riverside in five sets.
The opening set was dominated by the Mavericks from the outset as they jumped out to an early 11-6 lead. UTA kept the momentum and would eventually force Trevor Johnson into a timeout. The Mavericks kept the pressure on CBU and would subsequently claim the opening set by a score of 25-14 to hold the early 1-0 advantage.
The second set was controlled by the Lancers, as they scored five of the first six points to force an early timeout from the Mavericks. CBU's lead would grow to as many as five at 20-15 to push UTA into taking its final timeout. The Lancers would lead 23-19 before the Mavericks mounted a furious comeback with six straight points to pull off a 25-23 victory and a 2-0 set lead.
The third set was one of the most entertaining of the entire season for either team, as it went 60 points deep and featured several impressive rallies. The Lancers would get out to a fast start with a 5-1 lead, but the Mavericks would slowly but surely chip away and would take the lead at 13-12. From there, the Mavericks controlled the frame, leading to a 24-22 lead. CBU would answer back with a pair of points to send the set to extra points. In extras, both teams would get to set point on three different occasions, but it was a Filippa Botcher block that eventually saved the Lancers from a sweep and nabbed the 31-30 set victory. The win was the highest-scoring set of the season for the Lancers.
The fourth set would be controlled from start to finish by the Mavericks, and they would hold off any comeback attempt by the Lancers to claim the match in four sets with a final set score of 25-21.
Emery Dejong led the offensive attack with a solid double-double performance of 15 kills and 13 digs on the outside. Eliana Posada and Olivia Meltion would each chip in eight kills for the CBU offense. At setter, Maddie Brown would have 32 assists to pair with seven digs and would add three kills to boot.
NEXT: The Lancers will conclude their Texas road trip on Saturday as they take on the Tarleton Texans in Stephenville, TX.
