ST. GEORGE, UT--- The California Baptist University volleyball team began its first conference road trip of the season against the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Thursday evening, with the home team winning in straight sets.
The loss drops CBU to 1-2 in Western Athletic Conference play and 5-10 overall. Utah Tech, meanwhile, will start 2-0 in WAC play and move to a conference-best 11-3 overall mark.
The Lancers went step-for-step with the Trailblazers at the outset of set one, but a sizable Utah Tech run would give the home team the advantage that they would ride to the 25-17 opening frame victory. The second set was all Trailblazers from the start, as they built an early 7-2 lead that quickly ballooned into a double-digit advantage. UTU would finally claim the victory, 25-13, to take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set started out competitive as the Lancers clung to an early advantage over the Trailblazers. Utah Tech would battle back and keep the Lancers at arm's length for a large portion of the frame. CBU would cut the lead to 18-16 before the Trailblazers would score seven of the final nine points to claim the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Eliana Posada and Emery Dejong led the Lancers with seven kills each, while Maddie Brown paced the team with 21 assists.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain in the Beehive State for a Saturday matchup with Southern Utah for a 12 PM PT start.
