RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team will embark on its first conference road trip of the season as it heads to the Beehive State to take on Utah Tech and Southern Utah.
The Lancers split the opening week of Western Athletic Conference play, falling to Tarleton in four sets and beating Abilene Christian in four sets in Riverside.
CBU will begin its road trip in St. George, Utah, to take on the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Thursday evening at Burns Arena. The Lancers and Trailblazers have a long history of competing against one another, dating back to 2006. In the DI era, the Lancers are 5-5 against Utah Tech but have had the edge as of late, winning five of the last six matchups. Last season, CBU split the regular season meetings but bested the Trailblazers in four sets in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament. The win was CBU's first WAC Tournament victory in program history.
The Trailblazers are off to a hot start in 2025, holding a 10-3 record, which is the best record in the conference thus far. UTU started off conference play with a sweep of Southern Utah last Thursday in Cedar City, in their only conference match of the week. Utah Tech was picked third in the WAC preseason poll and had the preseason player of the year in outside hitter Kennedi Knudsen. Knudsen won WAC Player of the Week honors four straight weeks to begin the season and currently leads the conference in kills and kills per set.
The final match of the road trip will take place on Saturday afternoon as the Lancers face Southern Utah in Cedar City. The Thunderbirds finished non-conference action 1-10, with its lone win coming against UC San Diego. Southern Utah dropped both of its opening WAC games to Utah Tech and UT Arlington. The Lancers split last year with the Thunderbirds, but do hold a 6-2 edge over them in the series history.
The Lancers have been ravaged by injuries early in the season, with multiple key players missing time due to nagging injuries. Eliana Posada missed the first seven games of the season but has returned better than ever. The graduate right side hitter is leading the Lancers at 3.60 kills per set and is second with 90 kills. Posada set a new career-high in kills against Tarleton with 19 and has recorded double-digit kills in five of the seven matches she has competed in this season.
