STEPHENVILLE, TX--- The California Baptist University volleyball team concluded its Texas road trip on Saturday afternoon as it battled the Tarleton Texans to a four-set defeat at Wisdom Gym.
The Texans inch closer to the top of the Western Athletic Conference standings as they move to 5-2 in conference play, while the Lancers drop to 2-6 and 6-14 overall.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle between the Lancers and Texans as the two teams exchanged scoring runs. CBU would get its first significant advantage with a 5-0 scoring run off a solid Reese Reed service run to take an 18-15 lead. Tarleton would counter with a 4-0 run of its own to retake the lead, and in spite of solid efforts from the visitors, would hold on for the 25-22 victory in set one. The second set was dominated outright by the Texans, as they never trailed and took a commanding 2-0 lead with the 25-12 set two victory.
The Lancers would not give in despite the 0-2 score and would get on the board in set three. Tarleton led by as many as six points in the frame, but CBU would mount a comeback to stave off the sweep. A critical Bella Breuer kill would force extras, and two Tarleton errors would ultimately give the Lancers the victory 26-24 to close the set on a 6-1 run. Tarleton would maintain control in the fourth set, never allowing the Lancers to get within striking distance through the majority of the period. A few late scoring runs would not be enough for CBU as the Texans would claim the final set 25-20 and the 3-1 match victory.
Emery Dejong continued her strong road trip with a game-high 19 kills to pair with three blocks to lead CBU with 20.5 points. Olivia Melton also posted a strong performance with eight kills and had a season-high 11 digs to lead the Lancers.
NEXT: CBU will return to Riverside briefly before heading back out on the road to face Utah Valley on November 1 at 12 PM PT.
