LAWRENCE, KS--- It was another solid week of golf for the California Baptist women's program after the squad traveled to the Sunflower Invitational hosted by the University of Kansas and secured a top-five finish among 14 programs. Pusanisa Ekkantrong had the best individual finish for the Lancers, shooting 10-over for a 17th-place finish of 76 golfers.
Ekkantrong started strong from the first round and kicked off her third tournament of the season with a 71, while Lisa Shimmon followed closely behind with an even 72. Ekkantrong stumbled during the second round on the first day and shot 5-over, and Burberry Zhang came up big for the Lancers with her lowest score of the tournament at 73. Shimmon was consistent and shot 74 during the second round, just two strokes off from her first 18.
"Solid tourney for us against some big teams," remarked Head Coach Marc Machado. "This was a great opportunity and a big step in the right direction for the Lancers and this program".
The final round of the tournament was the best for true freshman Shuyi Cao, who posted a 75, while both Ekkantrong and Samantha Dizon shot 6-over. Both Dizon and Shimmon finished tied for 21st, while Zhang and Cao ended tied for 32nd. Overall, CBU finished fifth of 14 programs and beat out an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team in Notre Dame, securing the program's second top-five team finish of the season. Cao led the entire tournament with 40 par holes, besting players from Missouri and Delaware.
Machado's squad will finalize the fall season with one final tournament at the Little Rock Golf Classic in Arkansas, hosted by the University of Little Rock.
