RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball squad will host the UT Arlington Mavericks in a lone conference contest on Saturday afternoon in Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers are coming off an 0-2 road trip in which they dropped matches to Utah Tech and Southern Utah in a combined eight sets of action. CBU is currently 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
The UT Arlington Mavericks come into the week 1-2 in WAC play and 9-6 overall, which puts them in a three-way tie for third in the standings. UTA also dropped both of its contests last week with a five-set loss in Stephenville to Tarleton and a four-set home loss to Abilene Christian. The Mavericks are the defending WAC champions after finishing last season undefeated in conference play and beating the Lancers and Grand Canyon in five sets en route to their first WAC crown.
UTA beat CBU in all three contests last season, including the five-set thriller in the WAC semifinals at College Park Center. The Lancers have only beaten the Mavericks once in the series history, and that was in the first-ever meeting in 2022 in Arlington. The Lancers are looking for their first win over UTA at home in program history. CBU will have to overcome one of the best service teams in the country this season as the Mavericks currently rank second in the country in aces per set (2.31) and are first in total aces with a staggering 150 through 15 contests. The Mavericks will make a pit stop in Orem, Utah, to take on UVU before heading to Riverside on Saturday afternoon.
CBU got some good news last week on the injury front with starting middle blocker Fillipa Botcher returning from a five-game absence and senior outside hitter Toree Tiffee making her season debut after nursing an elbow injury. The Lancers will look to overcome some of their recent offensive struggles with the healthiest lineup they have had in quite some time. Overall, the Lancers are being led by the combination of Emery Dejong and Eliana Posada, who have combined for 313 total kills on the season. Posada has set new single-game highs in kills and hitting percentage this season, and Dejong is having her best statistical season in her three-year career.
