RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will open week two of its season with a road contest at Long Beach State before returning home to Riverside for a bout against San Jose State in the Fowler Events Center on Friday.
CBU went perfect on opening with a pair of comeback thrillers over UC Riverside and Pacific. The Lancers trailed the majority of the game in both contests but would submit phenomenal second halves to start 2-0 for the first time since 2023.
The opening contest of the week will be the second of seven future Big West matchups this season as they take a short road trip to face Long Beach State at the Pyramid. The Beach had a challenging opening week with a pair of tough road games at Wyoming and Colorado State, in which they suffered a pair of 30+ point losses. The Wednesday matchup will be Long Beach's home opener, a venue in which they went 9-6 a season ago. Sophomore guard JaQuoia Jones-Brown has been the team's leading scorer over two games, averaging 13 points per game and leading the Beach in rebounds with 14.
This will be the fifth all-time matchup between CBU and Long Beach State, with the last one taking place in 2023 when the Lancers defeated LBSU in Riverside. Last time the two teams met at the Pyramid, it was Long Beach State who came away with a 67-59 win.
The second matchup of the week will be a home contest against the San Jose State Spartans on Friday as part of Parent and Family Weekend at CBU. The Spartans come into the matchup 0-1 after dropping a road game at BYU 51-70 in Provo. San Jose finished last season with a 10-22 record and is now coached by Jonas Chatterton in his first season. The Spartans only have six returners from a season ago. This will be a first-time matchup for the Lancers, with the two California-based squads squaring off for the first time. The Spartans will be one of two Mountain West matchups on the schedule as they will head to Boise, Idaho, in early December for a contest with Boise State.
The Lancers have gained some early-season notoriety in the opening week of the 2025-26 College Basketball schedule, currently ranking in the top ten in rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. A large part of that has been the stellar play of Filipa Barros and Emma Johansson. Johansson is currently leading the country in rebounding at 16.5, while Barros is 6th in the NCAA at 14.5. Barros is second in the country amongst guards in rebounding behind only Aaliyah McQueen of Detroit Mercy. Johansson has also been a force in her rim protection, currently leading the NCAA in blocks with 5.5 per contest.
The Lancers have received scoring contributions from a variety of different sources, with newcomers Chance Bucher and Lauren Olsen leading the team in scoring in the opening two games. Bucher scored 22 on opening night against UCR, while Olsen would come within one of the DI Freshman scoring record for cBU with 27 at Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
