LONG BEACH, CA--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team kept its early winning streak alive against Long Beach State behind a triple-double performance from Filipa Barros.
The win gives CBU a 3-0 start for the first time since 2023 and helps them start 2-0 on the road. The loss will drop Long Beach State to 0-2 to begin the season.
The Lancers caught fire from beyond the arc early in this game, connecting on four in the first period. CBU's lead was as high as 14 in the opening frame, but the Beach would chip away toward the end and only trail by nine after the opening ten minutes. LBSU would slice the lead down to five in the opening minutes of the second period, but the Lancers would counter with an 11-3 run to push the lead back over double digits. CBU kept its foot on the accelerator and would take a 41-29 lead into halftime.
The Lancers, as they have been doing all season thus far, dominated the second half, owning a 42-31 advantage. CBU would do its damage early in the third quarter with 18 quick points to balloon the lead to 22 ahead of the media timeout. Long Beach threatened to get back in the game on a few occasions, but the Lancers would continue their offensive onslaught and would hold their 20-point lead heading into the final frame. CBU led by at least 20 points throughout the rest of the ball game and would eventually ride out the 83-60 victory at Walter Pyramid.
Barros was the star of the show, recording a triple-double with ten points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists in 35 minutes of action. She would also tack on four steals to keep herself near the top of the NCAA leaders in that category. The triple-double was just the second in the program's history, with the last one occurring in February of 2023. Khloe Lemon led the scoring with 17 points on five made triples, while Chance Bucher scored 15 points all on three-pointers. Lauren Olsen continued her strong play with 15 points off the bench to pair with five rebounds, while Emma Johansson was the final player in double figures with 11.
CBU outscored Long Beach State by 30 from the perimeter, connecting on a season-high 14 threes, while shooting over 35%. The Lancer bench was also impressive, outscoring the Beach 21-10.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home for a battle with San Jose State on Friday, November 14, at 5 PM.
