RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team got its fourth consecutive win to begin the season on Friday night as they battled the San Jose State Spartans to a 69-55 result in Riverside.
The win marked a significant milestone for Head Coach Jarrod Olson as it was the 300th of his highly successful career in Riverside. The Lancers move to 4-0 while the Spartans drop to 0-2 in the early going of the season.
It was a slow start for both teams, with the scoring held to a minimum over the opening half of action. The Spartans kept pace with the Lancers throughout the first half and would even open up a slight lead toward the end of the first quarter. The Lancers' defense was the catalyst early and often, forcing 17 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. CBU would score 16 of its 30 first-half points off turnovers as the score would be tied at 30 apiece heading into the locker rooms.
The third quarter began with an 8-0 San Jose State run to force Jarrod Olson to burn a quick timeout to refocus his squad. Out of the timeout, Coach Olson's squad put up a 10-2 run to tie the game back up ahead of the third quarter media timeout. The rest of the third period would be a back-and-forth battle with the Lancers eventually taking a 53-47 lead into the quarter break. CBU broke away from the Spartans in the fourth quarter, utilizing suffocating defense and efficient offense to steal away any momentum the Spartans had. The Lancers forced eight turnovers in the fourth quarter and would force multiple scoring droughts from SJSU to grind out the 69-55 final.
The win would be the 300th win at CBU for Head Coach Jarrod Olson as he begins his 14th season in Riverside. The CBU defense was the story of the night, forcing a DI-era record 33 turnovers in the win, fueled by a DI-era record 22 steals.
True Freshman Lauren Olsen continues her incredible start to her collegiate career with a game-high 23 points off the bench. Olsen connected on three triples and would score 14 of her points in the second half to spur on the victory. Filipa Barros was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive side of the ball by recording a career-best eight steals and forcing bad possessions on multiple occasions from the Spartans. The eight steals were the most in a single game in the DI era and add to her season totals, which rank in the top five in the country thus far.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain at home for a mid-week battle with CSUN on Wednesday, December 19, at 6 PM.
