RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team picked up its fifth straight win to begin the season with a wire-to-wire victory over the CSUN Matadors on Wednesday evening in Riverside.
CBU's defense and offense were both phenomenal, as they shot over 45% from the floor and held the Matadors under 35% shooting. The Lancers are now 5-0 for the first time since 2023, and the Matadors will drop to 2-2 following the loss.
The Lancers wasted no time getting their offense clicking as Filipa Barros would connect on two early triples in the first quarter. CBU kept its foot on the gas from the jump and would double up the Matadors at the end of the first quarter, leading 24-12 after ten minutes. The Lancer offense continued its onslaught into the second quarter, and its defense held the Matadors to just two made field goals in the period, as the lead expanded to as many as 31. CBU would have a comfortable 46-20 lead at the half's end.
CBU continued to build on its lead in the third quarter, and its bench would produce some quality minutes in the process. CSUN's offense would pick up some steam in the fourth quarter, but the game was already out of hand. The Lancers would eventually grind out the 86-54 victory, emphasized by Aleyah Harmon's first collegiate points in the waning seconds of the game.
Filipa Barros continues to stuff the stat sheet this season, tying her career-high with 24 points on a career-high six made triples. Barros collected 11 rebounds, dished out seven assists, and connected on all three of her free throws as well. Emma Johansson continues to be a force on both sides of the ball, posting 11 points and 11 rebounds while adding three more blocks to her NCAA-leading total. Shawnee Nordstrom led the bench forces for CBU with a career-high 14 points on five made field goals.
The Lancers outshot CSUN 46%-34% from the field and would be a +21 from behind the arc. CBU's defense continues to cause problems for the opposing offense, forcing 21 turnovers on the night with 12 steals. CBU would also have a definitive advantage on the glass with a +14 margin, and its bench would outscore the Matadors 32-10.
NEXT: CBU will take a week off before hosting the CBU Classic on November 28 and 29, starting with a matchup against UC Santa Barbara.
