RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will host CSUN this week in Riverside in their only contest of the week.
The Lancers have begun the season 4-0 with a pair of home and road wins, with the most recent being a 69-55 home victory over the San Jose State Spartans last Friday.
This will be the fourth matchup in program history between the Lancers and Matadors, with the most recent one coming down to the wire last season. Anaiyah Tu'ua was the hero of the game a season ago, converting the go-ahead field goal with under a second to go to claim the victory for the Lancers 73-71 in Northridge. CBU has yet to lose to CSUN at home, posting a 2-0 record in the teams' short matchup history. For the Lancers, this will be one of seven future Big West opponents on the calendar as they look forward to making the leap to the conference next summer.
The Matadors are off to a 2-1 start with home wins over Bethesda and San Diego and a road loss to San Diego State in their most recent outing. CSUN is coached by long-time Associate Head Coach of CBU Angie Ned, who is in her second season at the helm of the Matadors. Ned spent ten seasons with the Lancers under Head Coach Jarrod Olson and was a part of over 230 wins for CBU. Ned, in her second season at CSUN, is off to a solid start, led in scoring by Saint Louis transfer Rita Nazario, who averages nearly 17 points per contest.
For the Lancers, the scoring has been pretty evenly dispersed over the first four games of the season, with three players averaging double-figures. The leader of that group is reigning WAC Newcomer of the Week Lauren Olsen, who is averaging 16.8 points per game off the bench and has already surpassed the 20-point barrier in two contests this season. Chance Bucher has also been a welcome addition for the Lancers, averaging 13.2 points per game and leading the team in threes made with 12. Filipa Barros, who missed the majority of last season with an ankle injury, has been on a tear this year with season marks of 8.5 ppg, 12 rpg, seven apg, and nearly six spg. Barros recorded a triple-double in the road win at Long Beach State and has been an all-around force for Coach Olson's squad.
