RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will host the CBU Classic over Thanksgiving break, welcoming in UCSB, Sacramento State, and Chattanooga to the Fowler Events Center.
The Lancers are one of 42 undefeated teams remaining in the NCAA, boasting a 5-0 record with wins over UCR, Pacific, Long Beach State, CSUN, and San Jose State. This will be the first Multi-Team Event the women's team has hosted in program history and will take place from November 28-29.
The first matchup of the tournament will be against the UCSB Gauchos on Friday afternoon. The Gauchos are off to a strong start to the season at 4-1 with wins over Grand Canyon, Seattle U, and San Jose State. Its lone loss came at the hands of #3 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. UCSB boasts one of the best perimeter shooting teams in the country, currently ranking tenth in three-pointers made per game and 28th in three-point percentage at 37.9%. CBU is also an exceptional three-point shooting team, ranking 18th in three-pointers made and second in attempts nationally.
CBU has faced UCSB five other times in program history, posting a perfect 5-0 record against the Gauchos. This will also be the fourth of seven future Big West matchups of the season for CBU, with the Lancers going 3-0 against such opponents to begin the season.
The second matchup will be determined by the result of the Sacramento State and Chattanooga matchup on Friday afternoon. The Hornets are 5-2 to begin the season with road wins at UC San Diego and Long Beach State and home victories over Stanton, Nevada, and Cal State Fullerton. The Hornets are in their final year in the Big Sky Conference and will join the Lancers in the Big West beginning in the summer of 2026. It will potentially be the first matchup in program history if the two teams meet in the tournament.
The Mocs of Chattanooga will be the final entry in the tournament and are coming into the weekend with a 3-4 record. The Mocs made it to the second round of the WNIT last season after finishing 17-15. This will be another potential first-time matchup for the Lancers and will likewise be the first time they have ever faced a team from the Southern Conference.
CBU will be led by reigning WAC Player of the Week Filipa Barros, who has been exceptional in her return from injury. The redshirt junior is in the top ten in the NCAA in both rebounding and steals, and leads all guards in the country in rebounding at nearly 12 per contest. Barros is one of four players to record a triple-double this season and leads the team in assists, steals, rebounds, and minutes played.
