RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the CBU Classic on Friday afternoon behind a red-hot shooting night from the visiting UCSB Gauchos.
The Gauchos shot nearly 50% from the perimeter and would outscore the Lancers by 39 points from behind the arc in the 74-49 win for UCSB. The loss was the first of the season for CBU as they hold a 5-1 record, meanwhile, the Gauchos improve to 5-1 and will play for the tournament champion on Saturday afternoon.
UCSB's shooting was incredible out of the gate as they would hit four triples in the first period to gather an 18-9 lead and the early momentum. CBU would close the gap a touch to begin the second period, but the Gauchos' efficient offense continued through the second frame, and their lead would increase to 36-23 at the halftime break.
UCSB completely blew the game open in the third quarter, making six triples over the ten-minute period as their lead increased to as many as 24. The Lancers would chip away a touch in the early minutes of the final quarter, but the Gauchos' shooting prowess did not dim down, and the visitors would take the 74-49 victory in the Fowler Events Center.
Lauren Olsen would lead the way for the Lancers in her second career start, scoring 13 points on 60% shooting from the floor. Chance Bucher would be the only other Lancer in double-figures, scoring 11 in 22 minutes of action. CBU's shooting and turnover woes would plague them in the loss, as they shot a season-low 31% from the floor and committed 13 turnovers.
NEXT: The Lancers will await the result of game 2 of the CBU Classic as Chattanooga takes on Sacramento State. The Lancers will play at 12 PM against the loser of that game.
