RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon, pouring in a season high 92 points in a 92-49 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets.
CBU dropped the opening game of the CBU Classic but would get back in the win column on Saturday with its third 20+ point victory of the season. The Lancers improve to 6-1 on the young season while the Hornets fall to 5-4.
The Lancers' hot hand was on display from the opening tip as they would drain five triples in the first quarter, three of which came from freshman Lauren Olsen, making her third career start. CBU shot a blistering 55% from the floor and the same mark from the perimeter, opening up a 25-10 lead through ten minutes. Sacramento State tried early on to cut into the lead, but the Lancers answered every attempt with a shot of their own, culminating in a 20-point lead off an Emma Johansson layup. Sac State would cut the lead down to 14, but Filipa Barros would connect on back-to-back triples to push it back to 20. CBU would finish the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 48-24 lead into the half, its largest first-half margin of the season to date.
The Hornets never got the deficit under 20 points in the second half as the Lancer offense pressed its foot on the gas for the entirety of the game. The lead grew to as many as 33 with CBU's bench doing the majority of the damage in the second half. The Lancers' two former Sacramento State players, Sofia Alonso and Paula Haw, would be major catalysts against their former team in the fourth quarter, with Haw scoring seven points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Alonso would connect on three assists to Haw and grab a steal. For Haw, those numbers were career bests in points and made field goals (3). CBU would finalize the victory with an end score of 92-49.
Olsen was the leading scorer for the second consecutive game, scoring a game-high 20 points on nearly perfect shooting from behind the arc. Olsen connected on six of her seven three-point attempts and seven of her ten field goals in the victory and was subsequently named to the All-Tournament Team. Khloe Lemon and Chance Bucher were likewise efficient from the field, connecting on a combined seven triples and each having 16 points. Filipa Barros stuffed the stat sheet with six points, nine assists, and seven rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.
The Lancers rebounded from a tough shooting performance on Friday with their best shooting game of the season in the victory. CBU shot a season-high 47% from the floor and 46% from three, outscoring the Hornets by 39 points in that category. The Lancers' defense was stingy as usual, forcing 18 Hornet turnovers that they converted into 20 points. CBU never trailed in the game for its second wire-to-wire win of the season.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road for the beginning of a three-game road trip, beginning with a quick trip to Malibu to face the Pepperdine Waves on Wednesday, December 3.
