RIVERSIDE --- The regular season champions of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) have added more hardware, as the conference office announced its final round of weekly awards on Tuesday. Following their work in securing a conference championship on Saturday night, CBU's Hugo Do Rego and William Lawson have been named players of the week.
The honors are the second for both Do Rego and Lawson this season. The Lancers claimed seven WAC weekly awards this season.
Do Rego wrapped up the regular season with a WAC leading 58 saves, registering 3.87 saves per match. His .773 save percentage finished the regular season as the third-best in the conference.
The junior goalkeeper registered three saves in Saturday's win in San Diego, including a diving stop in the first half in which Do Rego fully extended to his left to deflect an Aztec attempt and keep the Lancers within one goal. The diving save was Do Rego's only stop in the first half. He added two more saves in the final 45 minutes, as CBU made its charge toward victory.
Aiding in the victory was this week's Defender of the Week, Lawson. Lawson picked up an assist on the Lancers' equalizing goal in the 47th minute, as both he and Felix Ezekwuka played a one-two-ball to Tizian Marth, who netted his third goal of the season.
Lawson added another heroic moment with less than two minutes showing on the clock, as Alexander Cruz played a ball into the box, finding Lawson, who hit one inside the near post on his first touch to give the Lancers the lead.
The goal was Lawson's second of the season. Each time he has scored a goal, it has been the winning tally for CBU, and a WAC weekly award has followed.
CBU wrapped up the regular season with a 9-3-3 record, posting a conference-best 4-2-1 mark in WAC action. With their first-place finish comes a bye into the second round of the WAC Tournament, which will take place in Riverside this season.
The WAC Tournament will kick off on Sunday with a pair of matches at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Lancers will begin their trek to a third conference tournament championship on Wednesday, November 12, against either San Diego State or San Jose State.
CBU's semifinal match will kick off at 7 p.m. Tickets for the WAC Tournament are on sale HERE.
