IRVINE, CA--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team fell victim to the red-hot UCI Anteaters on Saturday afternoon, falling 77-57 at the Bren Events Center.
The loss brings CBU's record to 6-4 in non-conference action and 4-2 against its future Big West competition. Meanwhile, UCI is off to one of its best starts in program history, improving to 8-2 and a perfect 5-0 at home.
The Lancers would start the game on a 5-0 run with Lauren Olsen and Emma Johansson connecting on the opening two field goals. UCI would ramp up its defensive pressure with a full-court press that got the Lancers out of sorts and caused the Anteaters to go on a 20-0 run, which would only be stopped at the 0:37 mark on a Reyleigh Hess layup. CBU would score the last two field goals of the frame, capitalized by a deep Olsen three to cut the score to 20-10 at the end of the first quarter.
CBU would get the deficit under double-digits in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Anteaters would respond with another large scoring drive that would extend their lead to its largest of the first half at 41-23. Filipa Barros would knock down a couple of late half free throws to bring the score to 41-26 in favor of UCI heading into the locker room.
CBU got the Anteaters into early foul trouble in the third quarter, resulting in the Lancers slashing into the lead from the free-throw line. UCI would respond once again with a large scoring run, resulting in its largest lead of 22 points heading into the fourth quarter at 60-38. The Lancers could never get the lead into manageable range in the final period as UCI would finalize a 77-57 victory.
Olsen would lead the way for the Lancers with 15 points and five rebounds, while Reyleigh Hess would score a career-best 11 points on 66% shooting off the bench for CBU. The turnover battle would be a tough stat to overcome, as CBU committed 15 turnovers that led to 24 UCI points, while the Anteaters committed only seven, resulting in just three points for the Lancers.
NEXT: The Lancers will have a short turnaround as they host UC San Diego in the Fowler Events Center on Monday, December 15, for a 6 PM tip-off in Riverside.
