RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will look to get back in the win column as they return home to face the UCSD Tritons on Monday, December 15, in the Fowler Events Center.
This will be the first home game for the Lancers since late November, when they hosted the CBU Classic against UCSB and Sacramento State. The Lancers went 0-3 on their road stand, suffering losses to Pepperdine, Boise State, and, most recently, UC Irvine. CBU stands at 6-4 in non-conference action heading into the week.
The Monday night matchup will feature the UCSD Tritons, who enter the week 5-4. The Tritons are coming off the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance a season ago, as they finished the season with 20 wins and a First Four loss to Southern University. Thus far this season, the Tritons have quality wins over Portland State, Denver, and Air Force, and are 1-0 in Big West play with a home win over Long Beach State. UCSD has built its early-season winning streak by controlling the turnover battle. The Tritons rank 29th in the NCAA in turnover margin and are in the top 45 in the country at turning their opposition over at 21.44 per contest.
The Tritons have three players averaging double-figures, led by junior forward Erin Condron. Condron is on a double-digit scoring streak of six games, including a season-high 19 points on 60% shooting in the Big West opener over Long Beach State. Sabrina Ma and Rosa Smith also averaged over ten points per contest, combining to average 25.4 points per game for Heidi VanDerveer's squad.
The Lancers will look to end their three-game slide by getting back to their strengths, which have been their defense and three-point shooting. The Lancers are top ten in the NCAA in shot blocks with 6.6 per contest, top 25 in rebounding (43.7 rebounds per game), and have a top 20 defense in opposition field goal defense (33.9%). CBU has also flexed its shooting muscles, ranking 5th in the country in three-point attempts (31.9) and 24th in makes per game (9.2).
