MALIBU, CA--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team dropped its Wednesday night road contest at Pepperdine as a fourth-quarter comeback bid ultimately fell short 69-58.
The loss drops CBU to 6-2 in the early portion of the season, while the Waves of Pepperdine improve to 5-2.
The Lancers started off hot with an 11-2 run out of the gates, led by Emma Johansson and Chance Bucher. CBU would lead by as many as 11 in the opening frame, but would settle for a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 17-8. Pepperdine would respond in the second quarter, taking advantage of CBU turnovers and foul trouble. The Lancers picked up eight fouls in the second quarter alone, leading to ten free-throw attempts for the Waves. Pepperdine would not only close the gap but take the lead on the Lancers, fueled by a 12-0 run to end the half. The Waves led CBU 37-27 after 20 minutes of action.
The Waves would double their lead in the third quarter, led by a 12-2 start out of the halftime locker room. CBU would trade baskets with the Waves down the stretch, but could not put a dent in the deficit and would trail 58-38 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lancers would mount a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, making the game interesting. CBU would slash the deficit all the way down to eight points with 3:23 remaining, but a pair of timely Pepperdine field goals would keep the Lancers from getting any closer. The Waves would close out the game and take the victory 69-58.
Emma Johansson had herself a night despite the loss, scoring a career-high 21 points on eight made field goals to pair with five rebounds and three blocks. Khloe Lemon also had a solid night off the bench with 14 points in 29 minutes. CBU's foul and turnover trouble ultimately did them in as they committed 20 and 16, respectively, on the night.
NEXT: The Lancers will take a quick trip up to Boise, Idaho, to take on the Broncos of Boise State on Saturday, December 6, for a 12 PM PT tip-off.
