BOISE, ID--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team would hang tough with a solid Boise State squad on Saturday afternoon in Boise, but would ultimately fall 82-80 at ExtraMile Arena.
The Broncos came in on a 20-game winning streak at home in non-conference action and would continue that streak to move to 8-1 in the early portion of the season. The Lancers fall to 6-3 with the loss and their second straight road defeat.
CeCe Legaspi, in her return to her home state of Idaho, would strike first with a corner triple to give the Lancers the early lead. Boise State would execute a 10-0 run in the middle of the first quarter to take its largest lead of the game at 17-8. CBU fought its way back into the game behind the hot shooting of Khloe Lemon, who would connect on three of her five triples in the first quarter to cut the lead to just two at 21-19. The Broncos would hit a three before the end of the period to lead by five heading into the second quarter.
The Lancers would get within one point on multiple occasions in the second period, but could never overtake the Broncos and would trail 37-34 at the end of the period. Lemon led all scorers at the break with 16 points on five made field goals off the bench.
The Broncos extended their halftime lead to as many as 13 in the third quarter, culminating with a 56-43 lead. The Lancers would mount a major comeback to end the period, led by terrific outlet passing and fastbreak opportunities. CBU would finish the frame on a 12-2 run to make it a one-possession game before the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The beginning of the fourth quarter was slow as both offenses struggled out of the gates. CBU would finally tie the ball game at 68 apiece off an Emma Johansson triple with 4:35 remaining. The Broncos responded with an 8-0 run to retake the momentum, but the Lancers were not done yet. Chance Bucher would knock down back-to-back triples to keep CBU alive and bring the deficit back to one score. The Broncos led 78-74 following a made free throw, but the Lancers continued to fight, and a Lemon triple would slash the lead back to one with 24 seconds left. CBU's foul trouble reared its ugly head in crunch time with four players fouling out, including Lemon, Johansson, Legaspi, and Olsen. Boise State would connect on both its free throws with 23 seconds to bring the score to 80-77. The Lancers would miss their opportunity to take the lead on the ensuing possession, and the home team would secure the victory, 82-80.
Lemon submitted a season-best performance with 26 points on 50% shooting from the floor. Lemon hit five triples in the game, all in 29 minutes off the bench. Johansson showcased her defensive prowess with six blocks and would have a double-double to boot (13 points, 10 rebounds). Filipa Barros would flirt with her second triple-double of the season with seven points, 11 rebounds, and ten assists.
CBU would outshoot the Broncos from the floor and from the three-point line, but the free-throw disparity ultimately did in the Lancers, with Boise State outscoring them 26-6 in that department.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home before hitting the road again on Saturday, December 13, against UC Irvine.
