RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's basketball team is preparing for its final road trip of the regular season as they visit Seattle U and Utah Tech in conference action.
The Lancers enter the penultimate week of Western Athletic Conference action 6-6 and are third in the standings. CBU's placement is anything but certain, as five teams are currently within one game of each other between the three and seven seeds.
The week will begin with a critical road contest at Seattle U against the Redhawks. The Redhawks are one of several teams in the logjam in the middle of the standings at 5-7, sitting just one game behind the Lancers. The Redhawks have dropped their last three contests entering the week, going 0-3 on their conference road trip to ACU, Tarleton, and Utah Valley. The Redhawks have been particularly good, especially in the Redhawks Center during conference play, holding a 5-1 record. CBU took the first meeting between the two programs in Riverside during the conference opening weekend 61-59. CBU and SU have engaged in a handful of highly-contested games over the years, with four of the last six conference games decided by one possession. In the earlier matchup, forward AJ Braun led the way with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double to help CBU hold off the Redhawks.
The final game of the week will be a matchup at Utah Tech on Saturday, March 1. The Trailblazers are currently in last place in the conference standings at 2-10 and have not won a contest since the opening weekend when they went 2-0 against UT Arlington and Tarleton at home. In the previous meeting between the two programs, the Lancers held off a late comeback attempt from Utah Tech on Homecoming Weekend to pull out the 86-83 victory in the Fowler Events Center. Dominique Daniels Jr. put on an offensive clinic in that game, scoring a season-high 36 points on 11 made field goals to lead the Lancers to victory.
