HOUSTON - The men's and women's swim and dive teams opened the 2025 Western Athletic Conference Championship as well as could be hoped for, already claiming a pair of conference champions and well over half a dozen All-WAC athletes on day one. The early success has the men pacing the field with 124 points, reigning champ the University of Nevada Las Vegas was not far behind with 110 points, and the women in second with 101 points, trailing 11-time champions Northern Arizona by just 13 points.
The Lancer women kicked the long weekend off in a big way by winning the first official event of the competition, the 200-yard Medley Relay. Sofia Maksimova, Lynn Henke, Sara Svorcan, and Naya Koc outtouched Grand Canyon by just .21 seconds to earn gold in a new school record time of 1:39.19. The men's relay team found their way to the podium as well, but as runners-up, also posting a school record time of 1:24.56.
The second CBU champion of the day defended his crown from a season ago, as Mario Del Valle won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 405.90. Teammate Gael Jimenez was right behind Del Valle in the standings, finishing second in the event with a score of 393.75. Nate Warson and John Angelovic made significant contributions to the men's team point total by making it four Lancers in the A-Final field of just eight divers. Warson placed 7th with 301.00 points, and Angelovic took 8th with a tally of 281.50.
Action rounded out with the women's 3-meter diving event, where Audrey Thordarson-Wehner led the women, finishing 4th with a total of 287.40. Bella Reynolds also made the cut for the A-Finals, taking 6th place with a point tally of 255.35.
