OREM, UT--- Efficient shooting and a career day from Shawnee Nordstrom gave the California Baptist University women's basketball team an 85-75 victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Saturday afternoon at the UCCU Center.
CBU improves to a league-best 7-1 in the conference and remains unbeaten on the road at 4-0. The Wolverines fall to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
The Lancers and Wolverines went back and forth offensively, with ten total lead changes in the first half. The first real scoring run came in the second period from the Wolverines, who scored eight straight to take the largest lead of the first half from either team at 29-23. CBU would respond to that scoring run with one of their own to end the half, ending the frame on a 10-1 to take a 37-36 lead into halftime. The hot shooting of Shawnee Nordstrom countered the hot shooting of UVU's Amanda Barcello, with the two players each hitting three triples in the first half.
The offenses for both teams picked up significantly in the third period, with each team shooting over 50% from the floor. Lauren Olsen got herself going after scoring just three points in the first half. Olsen would score 13 of CBU's 25 points in the frame as the Lancers swung the momentum in their favor, leading by as many as five in the quarter.
CBU's shooting brought them home in the fourth quarter as the Lancers connected on four out of seven triples in the period. CBU fended off several runs from Utah Valley as they seemingly had an answer for every one of the Wolverines shots. UVU crept within two possessions with 1:38 to play, but Nordstrom would connect on her seventh triple of the game on the ensuing possession to dash UVU's dreams of a comeback. Olsen would hit another to wrap up the victory, 85-75 for the Lancers.
Nordstrom was the story of the afternoon, scoring a career-high 21 points all on made triples with a career-best seven from the perimeter. Nordstrom, a true sophomore who played high school ball at Lone Peak High School just a few minutes from Orem, has been instrumental in CBU's conference success this season and now adds the best offensive output of her young collegiate career. Olsen was phenomenal as always with 19 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Grace Schmidt was a force in the middle, scoring 12 points on near-perfect shooting (6-7).
CBU's perimeter shooting was key in the victory, netting 13 on nearly 50% shooting from behind the arc. The Lancer offense scored 85+ points for just the fourth time this season and would shoot over 50% for the second time this season at 51%.
NEXT: The Lancers will return to Riverside next week for a home match with UT Arlington on Saturday, January 31, at 1 PM PT.
